Pattaya has the most visible transgender scene in Thailand, and it runs on two tracks that visitors constantly confuse. One is theatre: Tiffany's Show and Alcazar are large, professional cabaret productions that sell tickets to families and coach tours and have done for decades. The other is nightlife: a set of bars, a freelance presence on Beach Road, and everything that goes with it.

This guide covers both, plus the terminology, the etiquette and one specific and very well documented theft pattern that catches tourists every single week.

Quick answer: For the show, book Tiffany's or Alcazar; tickets run roughly 500-1,200 THB and the performances are ordinary family entertainment. For nightlife, ladyboy bars cluster at the Beach Road end of Walking Street, on parts of Soi 6, and along Beach Road itself after dark. The single most important safety fact: theft from tourists by freelancers met on the street at night is common and well documented, and it happens in hotel rooms, not in bars.

Terminology: Kathoey, Ladyboy, and What to Actually Say

"Ladyboy" is the English term used across Thai tourism, including by the people it describes and on the marquees of the biggest venues in the country. It is the search term everyone uses, which is why it appears in this guide.

The Thai word is kathoey (กะเทย). Thailand has a long-established and broadly visible transgender population, with an accepted social presence in entertainment, hospitality, retail and beauty work that has no real equivalent in most Western countries. That visibility is not the same thing as full legal equality: Thailand still does not permit a legal gender change on identity documents, which affects everything from banking to travel.

Practical etiquette: most people in this scene present and live as women and use she and her. Use the pronouns someone uses for themselves. Do not ask about surgery, do not ask what someone was "before", and do not treat a person as a curiosity or a story to take home. This is a normal part of Thai society, not an attraction.

Cabaret Shows: Tiffany's and Alcazar

The cabaret shows are the mainstream face of the scene and by a large margin the most popular way visitors experience it. Both are large purpose-built theatres on Second Road in North Pattaya, running 70 to 90 minute productions of lip-synced musical numbers, elaborate costumes, national dance sets and comedy routines.

Tiffany's Show Alcazar
Location 464 Moo 9, Second Road, North Pattaya 78/14 Second Road, North Pattaya
Format The original, running since 1974 Larger cast, heavier on spectacle
Show length About 70-90 minutes About 70-90 minutes
Typical shows per night 2-3 3-4
Ticket price Roughly 500-1,200 THB by seating tier Roughly 500-1,200 THB by seating tier
Audience Families, couples, tour groups Families, couples, tour groups

Both are entirely suitable for families and couples, and both are worth booking ahead in high season (November to February). Tickets are cheaper booked online than bought at the door or through a hotel desk.

The one thing nobody warns you about: after the show, performers line up outside for photos and expect a tip of 100-200 THB per photo. It is not a scam, but it does surprise people who thought the photo was included.

Where the Ladyboy Bars Are

The nightlife side of the scene has a few reliable locations:

  • The Beach Road end of Walking Street. The strip nearest the Beach Road entrance has the highest concentration of ladyboy bars and cabaret-style bars in the city.
  • Soi 6. A handful of bars along the street operate as ladyboy bars, mixed in with the rest.
  • Beach Road after dark. A significant freelance presence, particularly the stretch between Soi 6 and Central Pattaya, and especially late.
  • Some Soi Buakhao and Tree Town bars are ladyboy or mixed, generally lower-key and cheaper.

The bar system works exactly as it does in the rest of Pattaya: drinks, lady drinks, bar fines, the same etiquette, the same pricing structure. See Bar Fines in Thailand and Lady Drinks in Thailand.

Prices sit in the same band as equivalent beer bars and go-go bars. Nothing about this category is inherently more or less expensive.

The Safety Issue Nobody Should Skip

This is the part of the subject that carries real, documented, repeated risk, and it deserves plain language rather than nudging.

The pattern: a tourist meets a freelancer on the street late at night, usually on Beach Road, usually after a lot of drinking, and takes them back to a hotel room. Money, phone, watch and passport are gone by morning. In a subset of cases the tourist was drugged, most often with something added to a drink brought to the room or offered from a bottle. Groups working together are common, and so is a second person appearing at the room.

This pattern is specific to street pickups and it is documented in Pattaya's own tourist-crime reporting year after year. Note carefully what it is not: it is not the cabaret shows, and it is not the licensed bars, where there is a venue, staff, CCTV and someone with a job to lose.

What actually reduces the risk:

  • Meet people in venues, not on the street at 3 AM.
  • Never accept a drink you did not see poured, and never drink something brought to your room.
  • Do not take a group back. Two people arriving instead of one is the moment to end the evening.
  • Leave your passport, cards and watch in the hotel safe. Carry a set amount of cash.
  • Use guest-friendly hotels with a staffed reception that logs visitors. See Guest-Friendly Hotels in Pattaya.
  • Tell someone where you are, or at least leave your phone location sharing on.

Etiquette in Ladyboy Bars

Same rules as everywhere else in Pattaya nightlife, plus a few specific to the category:

  • Ask before taking photos. This applies harder here, because people have families and jobs and are not content for your feed.
  • Do not ask invasive medical questions. It is nobody's business.
  • Do not treat surprise or curiosity as an excuse to be rude. If a bar is not what you expected, finish your drink or just leave. Making a scene is the worst option available.
  • Do not use slurs. "Ladyboy" is the venue's own word; the English slurs are not.
  • Ask prices before agreeing to drinks, as you would in any Pattaya venue.
  • Accept "no" immediately, and expect the same courtesy back.

Legal Points Worth Knowing

  • Being transgender is not criminalised in Thailand and the social presence is broadly accepted, but legal gender recognition on ID documents is not available.
  • Prostitution is illegal in Thailand under the Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act, tolerated in practice, enforced inconsistently, and it applies identically here as anywhere else in the scene.
  • Anyone under 18 is off limits, absolutely, in every venue and every context.
  • Photography of staff or customers without consent will get you removed from a venue.

FAQs

What is the difference between Tiffany's and Alcazar?

Tiffany's is the original, running since 1974, and slightly more polished. Alcazar has a larger cast and leans harder into spectacle. Both are around 70-90 minutes, both cost roughly the same, and most visitors would struggle to say one is clearly better.

How much are ladyboy cabaret tickets in Pattaya?

Roughly 500-1,200 THB depending on seating tier, cheaper booked online than at the door. Photos with the cast afterwards cost 100-200 THB in tips.

Are the cabaret shows suitable for families?

Yes. Both Tiffany's and Alcazar are mainstream family entertainment with coach tours in the audience. They are not adult venues.

Where are the ladyboy bars in Pattaya?

Mainly the Beach Road end of Walking Street, some bars on Soi 6, parts of Soi Buakhao and Tree Town, plus a large freelance presence along Beach Road at night.

Is the ladyboy scene in Pattaya safe?

The venues are as safe as any other Pattaya bar. The documented risk is concentrated in street pickups taken back to hotel rooms, where theft and drink spiking are common enough to be a recurring feature of local crime reporting. Meet people in venues, secure your valuables and never drink something you did not see poured.

What should I call someone?

Use the pronouns they use for themselves, which in almost all cases here is she and her. If you genuinely do not know, ask politely once, or simply avoid pronouns until it is clear.
